MTA LIRR - Mainline 3rd Track Expansion

Owner: MTA LIRR

Project Cost: $ 2 Billion

The Project consists of approximately 9.8 miles of additional track infrastructure, including a new 3rd track and associated systems (signals, power, and communications); grade crossing modifications (separations and/or closures); modification of existing or newly constructed line structures (bridges); station and parking improvements; utility relocations; drainage improvements; substation replacements; as well as other improvements along the Main Line between Floral Park (Bellerose Interlocking) and Hicksville Station (the Divide Interlocking) in Nassau County.

Five stations included New Hyde Park, Mineola, Carle Place, Merillon Avenue, and Westbury, will be improved to facilitate the third track.

Westbury Station Enhancement: As part of the LIRR Expansion Project from Floral Park to Hicksville, the station will undergo improvements that were developed in consultation with the local community. The station improvements will include: platform replacement to accommodate a new third track; platform canopies; new platform furnishings and accoutrements including benches, shelters and signage; CCTV security cameras to improve safety; an extension of the Westbury Station pedestrian tunnel; ADA-compliant mobility improvements including elevators, ramps and overpasses; Wi-Fi; USB charging stations; digital information displays; and a low-maintenance pocket park near Post Avenue. The interior and exterior of the station building will be renovated. New bike racks and artwork will also be installed.

In conjunction with the LIRR Expansion Project, upgrading Westbury Station will be important to accommodate a future increase in ridership. Enhancements to Westbury Station are part of a broader LIRR initiative to strengthen the reliability and resiliency of LIRR infrastructure as well as support the growth and development of Long Island.
